Péter Magyar defeats Viktor Orbán and ends 16 years of government in Hungary

With 98.7% counted, Péter Magyar (Tisza) wins 138 seats against Orbán's 55 and nearly 54% of the vote. Magyar promises to restore the rule of law, strengthen education and healthcare, and reorient Hungary toward the EU.

The victory of Péter Magyar ends the mandate of Viktor Orbán after 16 years, with the Tisza party obtaining a clear majority over Fidesz.

The result changes dynamics with the European Union because Orbán's place on the European Council and his use of the EU veto to block common policies will no longer be effective.

Magyar promised to restore the rule of law and recover blocked EU funds, conditions necessary for the Commission to release around €18 billion.

The contest was marked by accusations of disinformation and alleged foreign interference, while record turnout reflects social rejection of the model built by Fidesz.

In the new Parliament two major forces coexist alongside a minor group such as Nuestra Patria (Mi Hazánk), and polls by Policy Solutions show a society divided on issues like Ukraine's accession to the EU.
