Corruption Scandal over EU Agricultural Subsidies Shakes Greece

Investigations by the EU Prosecutor’s Office into the embezzlement of agricultural subsidies worth millions led to several ministerial resignations. Opposition parties are calling for the government's resignation and snap elections.

The revelations concern alleged irregularities in EU agricultural subsidies processed through the agency OPEKEPE, which investigators say involved millions of euros.

The investigations were led by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), which requested the lifting of parliamentary immunity for several MPs, prompting high-ranking government officials to resign.

Those affected are mainly members and officials of the party Nea Dimokratia, putting the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis under severe pressure and fueling demands for resignation and early elections.

In addition to politicians, ministerial posts including the Civil Protection (Ministry) were vacated; experts warn the affair could seriously endanger Greece's political stability.
