The Rima Hassan was arrested in France and placed in custody, the authorities detaining her for “apology of terrorism (France)” following a deleted post on X (formerly Twitter).

The detention occurred despite her status as an elected member of the European Parliament, prompting protests from her party, La France Insoumise (LFI), and accusations that the action aims to curtail the freedom of supporters of Gaza (Gaza Strip).

The post in question referred to Kōzō Okamoto and the Lod airport attack (1972), a historical episode of violence that formed the basis of the investigation opened after a report from the camp of Rassemblement National (RN).

LFI officials and parliamentarians denounce an instrumentalization of the police and judiciary under the presidency of Emmanuel Macron, while the police also reported the discovery of a small quantity of synthetic drugs during the arrest.

Hassan, elected in 2024, became known for her participation in the Global Sumud Flotilla and her advocacy against what she calls a genocidal war in Gaza (Gaza Strip); her case fuels heated debates about immunity and the criminalization of activism.
