Greens submit bill for 130 km/h speed limit

The Greens have submitted a bill for a 130 km/h speed limit on motorways to reduce consumption, prices, emissions and accidents. Support comes from environmental groups and the Federal Environment Agency.

The Green parliamentary group has tabled a bill for a general speed limit of 130 km/h on German motorways, with the aim of quickly reducing fuel consumption.

The draft argues that because air resistance increases with speed, fuel demand rises significantly and a speed limit could therefore dampen consumption and prices.

Support for the initiative comes from trade unions, motorists' clubs and environmental organizations such as BUND / DUH / Greenpeace, while the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) wants measures to be linked with climate and social policy for relief.

In parallel, the federal government is planning a temporary reduction of the energy tax on petrol and diesel, and the UBA points out that longer-term relief could also be achieved through heat and electromobility.
