A French couple released from Iran after more than three years in detention

Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, arrested in May 2022 and held at Evin Prison, left Iran in a diplomatic convoy. Their release, which Tehran said was linked to an exchange involving Mahdieh Esfandiari, has not been confirmed by France.

The departure took place in a diplomatic convoy escorted, according to the French foreign ministry, with discreet mediation help from Oman.

Tehran linked the couple’s exit to the situation of Mahdieh Esfandiari, detained in France, and the official agency IRNA reported that an agreement including her release had been reached.
