Gravina and Buffon resign after Italy's World Cup elimination

Gabriele Gravina resigned as FIGC president after Italy's elimination in the play-offs (loss on penalties to Bosnia). Gianluigi Buffon left the role of head of delegation. FIGC elections on June 22; UEFA warns of the risk of losing co-hosting of Euro 2032 due to infrastructure shortcomings.

The resigning federation president, Gabriele Gravina, resigned after the Italian national team failed to qualify for the World Cup, a decision made during a meeting at the FIGC headquarters.

The elimination came with defeat in the penalty shootout in the play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving Italy out of three consecutive World Cups despite the success at Euro 2020.

Also Gianluigi Buffon, head of the national delegation, resigned, stating that with Gravina's departure it was appropriate to leave the choice of his successor to whoever comes next.

The president of the UEFA, Aleksander Čeferin, warned that Italy risks losing the co-host role for Euro 2032 if it does not resolve the problems of the FIGC and stadium regeneration, raising doubts about the country's organizational capacity.

The FIGC set the vote for a new president on June 22 and among the candidates is Giovanni Malagò, former CONI president and known for his role in organizing the Milano-Cortina Games.
