The UK government is appealing a High Court ruling that found its ban on Palestine Action unlawful, keeping the proscription in place while activists and rights groups condemn the move.

The UK government is asking the Court of Appeal to overturn a High Court ruling that found the ban on Palestine Action unlawful and described its proscription as disproportionate.

Palestine Action, a direct-action group, was banned last July, and since then thousands of people have joined protests in support of it, with more than 2,700 arrests made under counterterror laws.

The case has also affected how police respond: the Metropolitan Police initially signaled it would be less likely to arrest supporters after the ruling, but later reversed that approach.

Support for the group has spread to public figures and academics, while some remand prisoners and activists on bail say their rights have been violated after association with the ban and related protests.

Rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch argue the ban chills peaceful protest, and the government says people can back the Palestinian cause without supporting a harmful organization.
