Setbacks for the far-right populism in Europe after defeats in France, Slovenia and Italy

Three recent ballots — municipal elections in France, parliamentary elections in Slovenia and a referendum in Italy — dealt blows to far-right populist parties, but analysts consider these results provisional.

In Slovenia, the Freedom Movement of Robert Golob achieved a narrow result against the SDS of Janez Janša, a victory described as "important but narrow" and likely to lead to difficult coalition negotiations.

The referendum rejection of the judicial reforms in Italy is seen as a rebuke for Giorgia Meloni and evidence that personality-centered strategies can make parties vulnerable.

Analysts note that, despite difficulties in major cities, right-wing figures like Eric Ciotti or national leaders such as Viktor Orbán remain powerful, aided by structural concerns related to deindustrialization and economic pressures.

Polls from organizations like Ipsos and Odoxa and controversies (e.g. the Black Cube affair) shape public perception, while the political evolution can still swing during events such as a snap election.
