Five European Broadcasters Boycott 2026 Eurovision Over Israel's Participation

Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland boycotted the 2026 Eurovision in Vienna to protest Israel’s inclusion amid the Gaza war. The EBU said Israel met participation rules.

The Eurovision Song Contest lost five participating countries after Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland announced a boycott following an EBU decision that allowed Israel to compete.

Boycotting national broadcasters said Israel’s inclusion created ‘disunity’ and explicitly cited the war in Gaza and reported limits on press access as reasons for their withdrawal.

The European Broadcasting Union said Israel’s public broadcaster fulfilled the contest’s entry requirements and defended proceeding with the event while adding safeguards, as the first semi‑final went ahead on May 12, 2026 despite visible arena protests.

Organizers and broadcasters described the withdrawals as among the largest political exits in Eurovision history, a development that could affect programming, audience reach and the contest’s goal of fostering cultural unity.
