Anti-Muslim chants in Cornellà embarrass Spanish football

At the Spain-Egypt friendly in Cornellà chants of “Muslim, if you don’t jump” were heard. Lamine Yamal appeared affected, the Mossos are investigating; politicians and the RFEF condemned the incident and there is a risk of FIFA sanctions.

The friendly match at the RCDE Stadium in Cornellà de Llobregat was marred by chants of “Muslim, if you don’t jump”, which provoked an institutional reaction and the visibly affected departure of Lamine Yamal from the field.

President Pedro Sánchez and minister Berni Álvarez condemned the events and demanded measures, while the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) said it had ordered announcements over the PA system and defended the federation's response.

Authorities and security forces, including the Mossos d'Esquadra, have opened investigations and there were criticisms about the late implementation of the anti-racism protocol in football during the episode.

The incident rekindles international and sporting concern about previous cases in LaLiga —such as the attacks on Vinicius Jr. and the previous insults toward Iñaki Williams— and increases the risk of sanctions from FIFA and its FIFA Disciplinary Committee, just as Spain competes to host the final of the World Cup 2030 (final venue) and receives political criticism such as that from Gabriel Rufián / ERC.
