Orbán: "Complete Renewal" of Fidesz After Election Defeat

After the landslide defeat, Viktor Orbán announces that Fidesz must be completely renewed. He intends to keep the party leadership for the time being, while Péter Magyar seeks a rapid change of government.

The new Tisza Party under Péter Magyar won an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary election, described as a two-thirds majority that grants the victor extensive powers in parliament.

Longtime prime minister Viktor Orbán admitted a painful defeat and called for a “complete renewal” of his party Fidesz, but said he would not step down from the party leadership immediately.

Péter Magyar announced plans to rebuild relations with the European Union and the NATO and to prioritize anti-corruption measures as well as improvements in health care and public transport.

Orbán pointed out that despite the defeat around 2.4 million people had voted for Fidesz, emphasizing that his party still has a significant support base in Hungary.
