Péter Magyar wins landslide — end of Orbán's 16-year rule

Péter Magyar won the parliamentary election with a likely two-thirds majority able to amend the constitution. Orbán's Fidesz suffered heavy losses. Magyar plans anti-corruption measures, media and judicial reforms, and rapprochement with the EU.

The 45-year-old Péter Magyar led his new Tisza Party to a historic electoral victory and, according to preliminary results, is on course for a constitution-changing two-thirds majority (constitutional amendment).

Longtime head of government Viktor Orbán and his party Fidesz suffered a heavy defeat after criticism grew over corruption, the NER (patronage system) and curtailed independence of the judiciary.

Magyar announced plans to reform state media such as M1 TV and to unfreeze blocked EU payments of frozen EU funds (€17 bn.) to normalize relations with the European Commission.

The election also marks a political break from Orbán's Russia policy, with opponents shouting slogans like 'Ruszkik Haza' against Vladimir Putin / Russia and Magyar promising better relations with the EU and neighboring countries such as Poland.
